What is coaching all about? It’s a typical question when people tell friends and family, they are a life coach. The typical “friend” response is who needs a coach?
All of us! To grow in life, no matter the circumstance, as an employee at a company, a CEO of the same organization. A recent college graduate or a professional athlete.
All professional and Olympic athletes have coaches. For instance, the top golfers and tennis players have multiple coaches. Baseball teams no matter the age or type have coaches.
What is it coaches do exactly? In sports, such as, golf, they evaluate the swing and strokes made by the golfer. They record the player and after the match review as much or as little possible to provide insights on how the player, no matter their rank, can get better.
All of us have blind spots because we can’t see ourselves swing a tennis racquet or view how we interact with others.
The life coach listens, gains invaluable information through a series of questions. An effective coach listens more than anything else and sometimes this is all their client desires at the moment.
The coaching case study situation is of a Sales’ Manager who is inexperienced and their current Director provides little or no direction and leadership.
The Manager contacted me on how to deal with performance issues with some employees balanced with having high level sales members on the same team.
I asked a series of questions and listened to her questions and level of frustration. I provided coaching on being more focused on those producing results.
There were other suggestions of coaching offered and they all worked in this case. The Manager is less frustrated, more energetic and has much greater sales results.
Coaching!
