Therapy or Life Coaching: Where Should You Start?

Therapy and life coaching can both involve conversations about change, goals and personal challenges. However, they are not interchangeable.

Therapy

Therapy is provided by appropriately qualified mental-health professionals. Depending on the practitioner’s qualifications and scope, it may address emotional difficulties, psychological distress, relationships, behavioural patterns, trauma and recognised mental-health conditions.

Professional titles, regulation and scope vary by jurisdiction.

Life coaching

Life coaching is generally future-oriented. Coaching may focus on personal goals, accountability, development, habits, career, leadership, confidence, performance and life transitions.

Life coaching is not a substitute for clinical mental-health treatment.

Questions to consider.

  • Am I primarily seeking mental-health or clinical support?
  • Am I experiencing persistent psychological or emotional difficulties?
  • Am I primarily looking for goals, accountability or personal development?
  • Would my situation benefit from assessment by a qualified mental-health professional?

These questions do not diagnose the visitor. They are a practical starting point for deciding who to speak with next.
